How Language influences Thought

This is the introduction of a 4 articles series on how the language we use influences our way of thinking.

The first part is titled “What is the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis – Ethnological Examples of Linguistic Relativity” and illustrate the story of the development of this hypothesis reporting the results of the transcultural studies that prove or disprove this theory.

The second part is titled “Who are the Pirahã – The Tribe with an impossible language” and takes into consideration a particular case of linguistic relativity.  It illustrates the discoveries of the former missionary Daniel Everett who studied for thirty years a strange amazonian Tribe whos language is so different from the ones we know that undermines the Universal Grammal theory of the greatest linguist alive, Noam Chomsky.

The third part is titled “What is NLP – Change the Language to Change Ourselves” and supplies a clear picture about the birth and the evolution of this practice, inspecting the Neuro-Linguistic Programming with critical eyes in order to distinguish pseudoscience from scientifical evidence-based statements.

The forth part is titled “What is Lojban – An Artificial Language for the Unlocking of our Mental Capabilities” and describes the design of Loglan by the sociologist James Cook Brown with the intent of testing the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis and how from these initial studies we got to current Lojban language.
